Trouble Every Day

(Claire Denis, 2001) · Trouble Every Day polarized audiences by blurring the lines between sexuality and violence. When a scientist (Vincent Gallo) searches out an old colleague who's gone missing and uncovers his ghastly secret, the stage is set for corporeal filmmaking of the highest order, soaked through with copious amounts of splatter and gore. The film's gruesome anatomization of the origins and consequences of physical lust suggests that lurking on the flip side of all carnal desire is a desire for carnage. 35 Shots of Rum

(Claire Denis, 2008) · Denis achieved international prominence for her intensely physical filmmaking style--but with 35 Shots, she proved her versatility by shifting gears to craft a mellow and warmly intimate study in human relations. The deep bond between Lionel, a widowed train conductor, and his daughter Josephine, a college student, takes center stage as Denis explores the various relationships in which they are entangled. The result is, as Dave Kehr says, "a ballet of emotions, executed with weightless grace and poise."
