On The Bowery
(Lionel Rogosin, 1957) •
Interspersed documentary and acted scenes tell a story in a place of poverty, dirt, and disease. The Bowery was where people slept on the street, or in a flophouse cubicle with a mat, light bulb, and chicken wire ceiling. Malingering, alcoholism, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and lice were almost normal. In the late 1970s, CBGB emerged in the Bowery, where the Ramones performed, and the punk-rock scene developed. On The Bowery shares its method with the later film Overlord (Stuart Cooper) and its tone with Frederick Wiseman’s soul tearing explorations of the uglier aspects of civilization.
