SATURDAYS THIS SUMMER

Wild at Heart

(David Lynch, 1990) · The road film that only David Lynch could make, Wild at Heart tells the story of two young lovers, Lula and Sailor. When Sailor angers Lula's psychotic mother, they embark on a journey across the South to escape the variety of thugs her mother sends their way. Based on Barry Giffords' book of the same name, it employs Lynch's signature black humor and surrealist style in what one Rolling Stone called "a bonfire of a movie." Hard Boiled

A must-see for Hong Kong-style action fans, Hard Boiled features Woo staples such as gangsters, impeccably-choreographed fights, and dual-wielded pistols, as well as a climactic, baby-filled escape sequence.

Wanda

(Barbara Loden, 1970) · Director-actress Barbara Loden embodies entrapment as Wanda, a Pittsburgh drifter who collides with a string of dire men. As Loden's debut and only feature, Wanda stands apart for its fiercely preserved textures: of 16mm, of the "uneasy intimacy" created by Nicholas Proferes' handheld cinematography, and of Loden's performance as a woman who "despite internalizing society's contempt for her so thoroughly to the point of losing sense of what she wants (Amy Taubin)" yearns silently for more.

Their lives interweave with friends and neighbors who similarly seek happiness through unspoken desires, doing so often with unspeakable "yet darkly sidesplitting" consequences. By turns sympathetic and wry, Todd Solondz's iconic black comedy tracks suburban life's dysfunctional shadows. Happiness continues to challenge viewers as much as "in fact, because" it entertains.
